Antique Gothic Grotesque: Deciphering the Typeface Name Game
via creativepro.com
Often, for me at least, the most difficult part of type design is deciding on a descriptive name for a font. Is it a sans or a gothic, or both? Or should I use the word "lineale," "monoline," or "grotesk" (or "grotesque")? Is "gothic" synonymous with "blackletter"? What if the typeface design has vistigial serifs, and therefore isn't quite a serif and not quite a sans serif? These are some of the many questions I ask myself. This article by James Felici does not answer all my questions, but it does shed some light on the complex and mysterious issue of font names. Somewhat reassuringly, the author concludes that "there are worse things than having fanciful or imprecise names for creative works." Whew!
